Exterior
For the train, I didn’t really know how to prepare my seams, as I wanted to cut each side of the train as one big shell to avoid any texture mapping issues, as the side was what the player would see in the final environment.
I tried a few different ways to see which would be the best way to go about this. I tried cutting the seams through each set of windows and doors, but that didn’t really work, as the textures just wouldn’t sit properly and create a seamless transition between each set.
I ended up going with my first thought of cutting it as one big shell. I was worried that the textures would come out blurry/pixelated. This was fixed by changing to a higher texture resolution.
I painted a blue stripe along the middle of the train, doing a similar design as the Taipei MRT trains. This made the outside less bland and look more cohesive with the blue theme I had.
I also painted on the height maps in areas around the windows and doors and also along the train on top of the blue. creating more depth.
For the axles I did a very basic metal material and added rust in certain areas. I didn’t want to spend too much on this area, as it most likely would not be seen in the scene.
Interior
UV and texturing were very straightforward, as most, if not all, of the textures were metal. I used the same textures for the side and bottom on the seat, and for the actual seat, I used a black mask and changed the colour to the same blue as the train pattern.
The handrails were also straightforward; all I really had to do was lower the roughness and up the metallic. Then add some dirt and grime.
