Week 7

ZBrush

15/04/24

I realised that my foot was inverted in Zbrush, which was quite surprising as it was fine in Blender. There wasn’t much I could do to fix it so I just got started on making a new foot. It was a bit difficult getting used to ZBrush again, but the sculpting was a lot easier here than it was on Blender.

I got started sculpting the head, and following some videos, I tried to get the nose and eye in first. It was very difficult to follow online tutorials as my smooth brush would remove any detail that I did and flatten everything out.

I had quite a lot of difficulty with the mouth. I couldn’t keep the shape of the lips; no matter what I tried, it would either be too bulky or too flat.

The biggest issue I had was that ZBrush would crash my computer very often, I checked if it was because of the poly count but it was only at 1 mil. It turned into such a massive issue that it was crashing every five minutes. Every time my computer crashes, it corrupts the ZBrush file, making it unusable so it got to a point where I wasn’t making any progress after a few hours.

I ended up using a default head from ZBrush to speed things up as I was running out of time. I started off with the default anime head and changed up a few things. To move things around, I tried using the move topology and clay strips brush but it didn’t really look like what I wanted compared to my sketches so I started again using the default female head.

Same thing with the anime head; I moved the eyes around a bit to make it slightly bigger and worked on the nose to make it less flat. The most important part was to make the eyes bigger and lips more plump.

After a bit of adjustment, I realised the head was in a very weird shape, I had completely stretched everything wide. The top of the head was also dented so I had to try and shave it down into shape. It was difficult to make any changes to the head as I couldn’t have my reference up behind it, which was why it ended up looking so morphed. Every time I tried putting up a reference through Spotlight, ZBrush would crash my computer so I had to do it by eye.

I made some adjustments but it still looked more like an alien than a doll. I added more definition to the nose and shaped it to the shape I wanted a bit more. The eyes were still stuck out the side too much, when I looked from the side, you could tell just how stretched it still was. I used move topology to try and bring the face in closer from the side to not make it so stretched.

The cheekbone was also an issue; from the side, it looked like it just didn’t exist so I had to add it to the cheeks, from the cheekbone down to the jaw.

I finally decided not to make the eyes so big and shaped them down looking at the head in different angles to make it as accurate as possible
