Week 4

Concept and Basic Modelling

04/03/24

Because I still didn’t have my concept at this stage, I decided to get started on the modelling to not waste much time.

I started off with basic shapes, trying to remember what I did last year for our lowpoly character. At first, I was using cubes to make the body, adding edge loops and moving the vertices around to try and make a human shape, but I didn’t really like the way it looked, and it was taking quite a while to achieve it as well since I did not have a sketch to reference off of.

I moved on to using spheres but it got even more complicated with the number of vertices it already had. I finally settled on cubes again but this time I used the subdivision modifier to edit it more easily while still retaining the round look.

Using the same method as the upper torso, I made the basic shapes for each part of the body but only on the right side and used the mirror modifier to copy them over to the left side. To do this, I had to add an object in the middle as a point of symmetry. In my previous attempts, I tried to mirror it without the middle object, which meant I could only mirror it from the object itself.

I was finally able to take a look at the concept sketches from my group member so I was able to create mine afterwards.

I made the base body with the BJD dolls in mind. Since she is a monster, I made her 9 heads tall to make her more intimidating.

As this was a middle -phase infection, I thought it would be a good idea to have her connected to strings like a puppet. Having the strings control her as she still has a bit of sanity left in her before she fully transforms.

I incorporated the make-up look into the concept, as both my group member and I really liked it.

I got started on a new file, remaking the base body in a blender. We had the option to use a premade base from ZBrush but since my character was going to be a doll with ball joints, it would’ve been more difficult to transform the premade into what I wanted.

Once I had the concept sketch, it was a lot easier to model the body as I had a reference to use. It was very easy to make the silhouette from the front but because I didn’t have the side view sketched yet, I was struggling with that.

Making the side view wasn’t the easiest either, my skills with side profiles werent as proficient as front profiles so the sketch was very rouch and perhaps even not proportionally or anatomically correct, but that could be easily fixed when modelling.

Now that I had the side profile done, I could get started on the side sillouhete so it doesn’t look flat anymore.
