I decided to come up with a mood board for every theme until I felt something for a particular one. Using Pinterest, I started gathering images that I thought worked with the theme.
I started off exploring what type of environment I wanted to go for. Using the brief, I tried to come up with an image and story for each of the themes. I had a common idea of a hidden garden for some of the themes, but I was hesitant to choose any of them as I couldn’t think of a story for them. I was leaning towards the mythical realm and forgotten utopia, as I had some sort of story to go off of with them.
Although done quite a lot, I liked the mythical realms theme. Drawing inspiration from the Chinese folktale “The Cowherd and the Weaver Girl” (牛郎與織女). A story set on Chinese Valentine’s Day, the 7th day of the 7th month on the lunar calendar, where the two forbidden lovers are allowed to meet. I really liked this story and wanted to make it part of the project.
I wanted to tell the story of a warrior and her lover, set in a secret garden where they could hide from everyone. Although both of them have long passed, their memories in their garden can still be seen, only touched by the passage of time.
