Initial Ideas

When discussing ideas with our group, there was only one designer at this point and he had a very clear vision of what he wanted.

The idea was to have firefighter robots set in futuristic London. We discussed the different obstacles in the game and came up with a few options.

Pit

  • Jump over fire pit
  • jump over spikes

Block

  • break down blocks with ray gun
  • break down blocks with axe
  • put down fires with water gun

we were struggling to come up with different ideas that would work for the game and it seemed like our ideas and opinions were clashing so it wasn’t a very conclusive first meeting.

I drew up a prototype of my idea so we could move forward

I discussed this with one of my group members and we thought it would be a cool addition if we added a spotlight to the character as it entered the building.

This idea ended up being scrapped as one of the tutors said that it was too complicated so we ended up coming up with a completely different one.

This concept ended up being a lot better than the previous one and everyone in the group seemed to like it.

Once it was clear what the concept was, we on the arts team started assigning different potitions to each other. It was quite easy to sort this out, as everyone’s preferences worked with one another.

Once everything was sorted, we focused on gathering inspiration and references on a shared Pinterest board.

My initial idea was something similar to Stardew Valley for the art style, but I wanted to consult the designers to see if they had any visions for it. I asked the designers what they had in mind for the environment and they said something similar to Super Mario Maker 2.

They wanted a plains/forest theme for the first two levels. I wasn’t really the biggest fan of the style but they said that it was just the idea that they liked, not in particular the style.
