Forest and Plains

For the environment, I was in charge of making the platforms. I had never done pixel art like this before so obviously I had to do some research. I ended up going to Pinterest to gather some ideas for the art style.

I found quite a lot of different guides on how to make side view tiles for pixel art, which was very helpful. I ended up following this one by Pedro Medeiros. By splitting it into different parts, I found it a lot easier. However, I didn’t really like the style so I followed the style from this guide on the right by SadFace_RL.

For the colour scheme, I wanted an earthy green but not so saturated. After consulting with my group, they liked the colours I chose so I got started on the tiles.

To make the pixel art, I downloaded a pixel brush online. It was important to be drawing on a square canvas. I chose 16×16 for each tile to make it easy with the pixel brush.

It was very important. I made sure I could connect the tiles so I split it into 3’s first and made the canvas 48×48 first. I started off with the sides. Marking the outline for each section; grass dirt and rock. Once that was done, I started on the details using the guide I found. Once the sides were done, I started the middle. Connect the edges from each side I worked from out to in.

Now that I had the complete block, I split it into 3 parts, each 16×16, which then looked like this:

Next were the inside corners. I used the same method but the canvas was 32×32 as I only needed two parts.

I also made some tiles for texture under the ground.

I also made a single-crack version to put into the part where our character has to break the blocks to get through obstacle 2

With all the tiles finished, I pieced them together according to the sample we had from the brief.

I also ended up making a grass tile be added on top of the ground tiles, as I felt it looked a bit too flat on top.
